Co-managed IT
Co-managed is for the business that already has somebody doing IT — a dedicated person, or an operations manager who has quietly acquired the job. They are usually good at it and permanently short of time, and the gaps are predictable: nobody covers them on holiday, and the work that needs a second opinion never reaches the top of the list.
We fill those gaps rather than replacing the person. They keep the relationship with your staff, which is the part that genuinely cannot be outsourced.
The three gaps this actually closes
Cover, first. One person means one point of failure — a holiday, a bad flu week, or a resignation, and the business finds out how much sat in one head.
Depth, second. A generalist should not have to become an expert in email authentication, firewall design or a migration they will do once. That is where an outside specialist is cheaper than the learning curve.
Capacity, third. Projects stall behind daily support because support is always louder. We take the project so it finishes.
- Holiday, sickness and resignation cover
- Specialist work: migrations, email authentication, network design
- Project delivery that would otherwise sit behind the ticket queue
- A second opinion before a decision that is expensive to reverse
- Documentation, so knowledge outlives whoever holds it
How we stay out of their way
Your IT person keeps ownership. We do not take over their tools, reassign their tickets, or go around them to management — an arrangement that makes someone feel replaced is one they will quietly resist, and then it does not work.
The scope gets written down at the start: what is theirs, what is ours, and who is called first. Ambiguity is what makes co-managed fail, and it is always ambiguity about responsibility rather than about technology.
Where the line usually sits
In practice they keep day-to-day support, user requests and the things that need somebody physically present. We take the scheduled maintenance nobody has time for, the specialist projects, and the out-of-hours window.
That split is a starting point, not a rule. Some businesses want us purely for cover and nothing else, which is a perfectly good use of it.
Common questions
Will this make our IT person redundant?
No, and if that is the goal you want fully managed instead — it is a different arrangement and we would rather be told which one you are actually buying. Co-managed exists because one internal person cannot cover every hour and every specialism, not because they are doing the job badly.
Can it be occasional rather than ongoing?
Yes. Some co-managed arrangements are a set number of hours a month, some are cover for specific weeks, and some are a single project. What matters is that it is agreed in advance rather than improvised during an outage.
