IT Support for Small & Medium Businesses in NJ

Most businesses we work with never set out to have an IT problem. They hired people, bought laptops, signed up for Microsoft 365 and a dozen other services, and somewhere around ten or fifteen staff noticed that nobody actually owns any of it.

That's the gap we fill, whether you have no one technical at all or one stretched person who needs backup. Small enough that you talk to the people who do the work; established enough to run it properly.

A bright open-plan office with exposed ceiling beams, a few people working at standing desks with monitors, and a leather sofa and potted plant in the lounge area.

The accidental IT person

In most small businesses, IT belongs to whoever was least afraid of it — an office manager, an operations lead, sometimes the owner. They're good at it, it isn't their job, and every hour spent resetting passwords or chasing the printer is an hour taken from the work they were hired for.

The risk isn't that they do it badly. It's that everything lives in one head: the admin passwords, which vendor set up the firewall, why that one PC is never switched off. When they're on holiday or leave, so does the knowledge. The first thing we do is write it down, so the business owns it rather than a person.

Outgrowing break-fix

Under about five people, calling someone when something breaks is usually the right answer, and we'll say so. Somewhere past that, the pattern changes: things don't break so much as drift. Updates stop installing, backups quietly fail, a former employee's account still works, and new starters wait two days for a working laptop.

That is the point where ongoing, managed support costs less than the disruption — not because anything dramatic happens, but because nobody has to notice the small things any more.

Security without a security team

A twenty-person business is attacked the same way as a large one — stolen passwords, phishing, fake invoices — without anyone whose job is to stop it. The fixes are mostly known and mostly cheap: multi-factor sign-in, tested backups, patched machines, and staff who know what a modern phishing email looks like.

It's increasingly also a sales question. Larger clients send security questionnaires before they renew, and cyber insurers want to know what controls are in place before they quote. We help you answer both honestly — and fix the answers that would otherwise be no.

Growing into a medium-sized business

Between roughly 20 and 50 people, the problems change again. Onboarding and offboarding become regular events rather than occasional ones. A second office or a remote team means the network can't just be the router in the closet. And you may hire your first internal IT person — who will need specialist help, after-hours cover and someone to escalate to.

We work either way: fully managed when there's no one in-house, or co-managed alongside your own IT staff, taking the parts they don't have time or tooling for.

What we're usually called for

  • Taking over from an accidental IT person, and documenting what they built
  • Microsoft 365 cleanup — licences, shared mailboxes, permissions, and multi-factor sign-in
  • New-hire setup and same-day account removal when someone leaves
  • Backups that are tested by actually restoring them
  • Office Wi-Fi and networks that have outgrown a single consumer router
  • Answering a client's security questionnaire or a cyber insurance application
  • Replacing Windows 10 machines that no longer get security updates

Questions we get

How small is too small for managed IT?

Below about five people, with nothing that stops when a computer does, you probably don't need it — call us when something breaks and pay for that instead. We'd rather tell you that than sign you up for something you don't need.

We already have an IT person. Do we still need you?

Maybe not, and they may well be doing a good job. Where we help is the work one person can't cover alone: holidays and after-hours, security tooling, projects like an office move, and a second opinion. That's co-managed IT, and it's designed to support your person rather than replace them.

Do you work with businesses outside central New Jersey?

Most of our clients are in Middlesex, Somerset and Mercer County, where on-site visits are a short drive. A lot of support is remote, so we can work further afield — we'll be straight with you about what on-site response would look like.

What does it cost?

It depends on the number of people and devices and how much you want handed over, so we scope it after a short conversation rather than publish a rate card. There's no charge for that first conversation.
