IT services in Montgomery Township, NJ

Montgomery Township is the Somerset County town just north of Princeton, and plenty of people who live here don't call it Montgomery at all. They say Skillman or Belle Mead, after the sections and post offices, and part of the southern end even has a Princeton mailing address. It's all one township, and we cover all of it.

Most of the commercial life runs along Route 206, especially between Route 518 and Cherry Valley Road, and that stretch is in the middle of being rebuilt. The 1960s Village Shopper centers north of the 206/518 intersection are being redeveloped as Village Walk, and the long-vacant site near Princeton Airport is becoming the Montgomery Promenade. New buildings mean new tenants, and that's where our first point comes from.

Moving into new space? The cabling decision comes before the drywall

When a business moves into a newly built unit, the IT conversation usually starts about a week before opening day. By then the walls are closed, the ceilings are in, and the only network option left is Wi-Fi from wherever the internet provider happened to terminate the line. That's often a utility closet in a back corner, and whatever is furthest from it suffers for as long as you lease the space.

The cheap moment to get this right is during fit-out, while the walls are still open. A cable to each desk, one to each spot where a ceiling access point will go, one for the printer, one for any camera or door system, and all of them run back to a single place where the network gear can live with power and some ventilation. Done then, it's a modest line on the build-out. Done after opening, it means surface raceway, ceiling tiles out, and working around your customers.

The other thing to order early is the internet itself. Business service to a brand-new address can take weeks to install, and if you're keeping an existing phone number, porting it has its own lead time. Neither one speeds up because the landlord handed over the keys. Order both as soon as the lease is signed.

Small practices that see clients over video

A lot of small clinical work, therapy and counseling especially, now happens partly or entirely over video, often from a home office. The tools that make that easy aren't always the ones that fit the obligations. A free consumer video app, a personal Gmail address for scheduling, and session notes saved to the same laptop the family uses for homework all add up to patient information sitting in places it shouldn't.

None of that needs an enterprise system to fix. Use a video platform that will sign a business associate agreement, keep a practice email account separate from your personal one, put notes in a system built for them rather than a desktop folder, and give the work laptop its own login, encrypted, that nobody else in the house uses. For a solo practitioner that is an afternoon of setup.

The other half is the room itself. A session from a home office is only private if the household can't hear it and the laptop isn't shared, so a closed door, headphones, and a screen that locks when you step away matter as much as the software.

Getting to you in Montgomery Township

Montgomery is around half an hour from North Brunswick, depending on which end of the township you're in and how Route 206 is behaving. On-site work here is scheduled rather than same-day, and we'll try to cover several things in one visit. For a fit-out, we'd much rather come out once while the walls are open than several times after they're closed. Remote support isn't affected by distance at all.

Common questions from Montgomery Township

  • I live in Skillman (or Belle Mead). Is that Montgomery Township?

Yes. Skillman, Belle Mead, Blawenburg and Harlingen are all sections of Montgomery Township, and part of the southern end of the township uses a Princeton mailing address. It's confusing, but it doesn't change anything about the service. Tell us your street when you call and we'll know where you are.

  • We're signing a lease in a new building. When should we involve IT?

Before the walls are closed, ideally while the fit-out is still being priced. Running data cable to desks, ceiling access points, printers and cameras costs much less with the framing open than after the space is finished. Also order your internet service and any phone number port right after signing, because installation at a new address can take weeks.

  • I'm a therapist seeing clients over video. Is a regular video app good enough?

Often not. The issue isn't the video quality, it's whether the provider will sign a business associate agreement and how the account is set up. Pick a platform that will sign one, keep practice email separate from personal email, and keep session notes off any computer that someone else in the household uses. We can set all of that up, usually remotely.

  • Do you do home computer work in Montgomery, or just businesses?

Both. On the home side it's mostly Wi-Fi coverage, slow or failing computers, and setting up new devices. Since Montgomery is a scheduled trip for us, we'll often start remotely, and that sometimes solves the problem before anyone has to drive.
